Porthcawl

Welcome

Porthcawl JOY-riders are the local chapter of the global movement Cycling Without Age. We are a bunch of local volunteers who give older people and less able folk of the Porthcawl and Bridgend area free rides along the splendid Porthcawl Seafront. We believe that we can bring joy to those who may no longer be able to enjoy a walk along the prom by offering them a ride in Cariad and Lilibet – our beautiful trishaws.

You can also listen to an audio described version of the video below.

Hear from our passenger

Pauline, a resident of Pinehurst who came on a JOY-ride with us

“JOY-riders

No, Life is not over even at the age of 91, even if your legs or brain are not very cooperative. My friend and I had some trepidation as we were the first two to be bundled into our specially designed buggy yes, with a strong cyclist instead of horsepower to drive us along our beautiful promenade where Joel and I used to enjoy walking nearly 20 years ago.

With a cheerful tune on our horn we were encouraged to join in JOY-riders as we set out.
We worship the God of joy who tells us to ask and we shall receive that our joy may be full.
We returned exhilarated and refreshed having covered ground where my husband and I used to walk together maybe 20 years ago, having waved happily to those shivering in the shelters, hopefully advertising the charity, Cycling Without Age.

I’m sure we’ll be signing up to join the JOY-riders again and encourage others suffering from the various disabilities of old age to accept this special blessing with gratitude and for the young and fir to join this band of noble volunteers. And if, like me, your days of cycling are long over, become a JOY-rider too.”

Volunteering

Becoming a rider: All our riders are DBS checked and have been fully trained by our in-house trainer Ian. Not all our volunteers are riders. We need people to help with media, organising and liaising with care homes, publicity, fundraising etc. So, whatever your skillset there will be a job for you. Please contact Steve at smccreery@hotmail.co.uk if you are interested in helping out.

Our trishaws

We have two trishaws purchased through generous donations from the Lions and Rotary club, the National Lottery and the Moondance Foundation. We would love to raise enough for a third trishaw. If you would like to support us please contact Steve at smccreery@hotmail.co.uk
