Maidenhead

Welcome to the Maidenhead Chapter!

Cycling Without Age (CWA) Maidenhead is a group of volunteer cyclists taking older residents out in a cycle trishaw named “Peggy” to feel the wind in their hair.

If Cycling Without Age is new to you, take a moment to watch the BBC3 Amazing Humans clip for an insight into what is involved and how it improves the quality of lives.

About the Maidenhead Chapter

Peggy is a beautifully crafted tricycle (three-wheeled e-bike) purchased from Denmark. It has a comfortable space at the front, complete with seat belts and a waterproof blanket to keep passengers tucked in, safe and warm. The ‘pilot’ i.e the rider, pedals from behind and another volunteer cyclist rides alongside on their own bike for safety and assistance.

We will take two passengers out for a ride around quiet roads and local parks, giving them the chance to enjoy the fresh air, see what has changed locally and to share memories. Our cycle pilots are all volunteers committed to slow safe cycling and chatting with our passengers.

The volunteers who started the Maidenhead chapter are active volunteers with GoodGym where they regularly visit isolated, older people who don’t get out of the house much. We have seen first hand how crippling loneliness can be and Peggy is our way of helping alleviate some of this loneliness.

Social isolation is a rising concern, so we hope, with the help of our trishaw and a group of dedicated volunteers, to make a real difference to the lives of the older people who are alone, or lonely, and not able to get out on their own.
